Michael E. Thompson, CPP, Vice President During the last 38 years, Mike has served in various capacities as a municipal Police Officer, including assignments as helicopter pilot, juvenile crime investigator and road patrol officer; District Court Probation Officer; a university Public Safety Officer; a Security Supervisor for a Fortune 500 Corporation; and is now the President and a founding partner of Joseph A. Young and Associates, Inc. Since 1991, the firm has specialized in Security Consulting, Random Drug and Alcohol Testing, Internal Affairs Investigations, Background/Pre-employment Investigations, on site Security Services, Emergency Planning, Training, and risk management for various educational, governmental, and corporate clients in Michigan. The Company has been featured in the Greater Lansing Business Monthly twice and awarded the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce, Business of the year in 1997.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Master of Arts in Education Administration from Michigan State University. He has been designated a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) by the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS). He serves as adjunct faculty at Michigan State University, School of Criminal Justice, Security Education Program, the Regional Community Policing Institute (RCPI), and Lansing Community College Criminal Justice and Law Center. He has been a guest lecturer at the National Crime Prevention Institute, University of Louisville, Michigan Association of School Boards, Michigan School Business Officials and both the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division and Prevention Services Section of the Michigan Department of State Police concerning school security issues. Mike is a founding member of the Michigan Safe Schools Initiative Work Group developing security related “best practices” for implementation in Michigan schools. He is considered an expert in school safety and security issues, having testified before both the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives Education Committees concerning safe schools.
Mike is the current Chairperson of the Private Security Liaison Committee of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police; a board member of Gateway Community Services, Crime Stoppers of Mid-Michigan, and served as a member of the Lansing State Journal Editorial Board (2006). He has served three terms on the Mason City Council, to include two terms as Mayor-Pro tem, was the City of Mason’s representative to the Ingham County 911 Board of Control; is a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Mason and the National Guard Association of Michigan; and past Chairperson of the Central Michigan Crime Prevention Association.
Concurrently, he served over 31 years in the Michigan Army National Guard and the United States Army Reserve retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on June 1, 1997. During his military career he held various command and staff positions from platoon through battalion command and as Director of Safety and Occupational Health, Joint Forces Headquarters Michigan, ending his career as the Logistics Assistance Officer, Ft. Rucker, AL. During his military career, he served a tour on active duty as Assistant Professor of Military Science at Michigan State University. He holds the military aeronautical designation of Master Army Aviator, rated in both rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft. He holds a FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate, rated in both Rotor wing and Fixed wing aircraft with instrument ratings, having logged over 2500 hours as pilot in command.
John G. Conaty, Director of Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs, is retired from the Ingham County Sheriff Department with the rank of Captain responsible for the Field Services Division. During his 28 year career John held increasingly more responsible positions including Division Commander, Corrections Division, Platoon Commander, Assistant Platoon Commander and Deputy Sheriff with experience as a Patrol Officer, Marine Safety Officer, Breathalyzer Operator and undercover Narcotics Officer. His specialized training at Lansing Community College included the comprehensive study of law enforcement, management, leadership, team building, and training. John has been with the company since his retirement in 1995 and manages the Drug and Alcohol Testing program. He has been designated a Certified Professional Collector Trainer (CPCT) through the Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry Association (DIATIA). This rigorous certification program requires experience in performing specimen collections, the training of collection personnel to efficiently and effectively function in the workplace, as well as a comprehensive written examination administered by a nationally recognized organization. John is also a certified Breath Alcohol Technician. John has testified before numerous administrative and arbitration hearings during his tenure with the company.
Douglas J. Pollard, Chief Investigator, During the last 40 years, Doug has served as a sworn police officer with the Lansing Police Department, as a Security Officer, Supervisor and Investigator with Joseph A. Young & Associates. While with the Lansing Police Department, Doug held a variety of assignments including; road patrol officer, community policing officer, personnel officer, field training officer, community policing officer, investigator, sergeant in the 911 communications center, road patrol sergeant, and field training supervisor. Other duties included; underwater recovery team, instructor in the Lansing Police Recruit Schools and the Mid-Michigan Police Academy at Lansing Community College teaching unarmed self defense/physical education and police ethics. Doug holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. He has completed several in-service training seminars at Lansing Community College Criminal Justice and law Center and Michigan State University. He has also completed Advanced Criminal Investigation School at Delta College, Fire Investigation School at the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and the Auto Theft seminar at the University of Iowa.
